This layer has students mapping New Spain and several missions, presidios and settlements of that time period. Students will also map Stephen F. Austin's colony and be able to put into context where exactly these people came from. Please contact your technology facilitator if you'd like a co-teacher for this lesson. Using Explain Everything, students will compare and contrast 2 images - a mural of Father Hidalgo and photograph of Martin Luther King Jr.
What To Do
Students will create a 3 slide Explain Everything.
On the first slide, students will identify key elements/objects in Father Hidalgo's mural and explain what they think Father Hidalgo is doing.
Students will do the same on the second slide with the picture of Martin Luther King Jr.
On the third slide students with compare and contrast the two primary sources. They could put both pictures side by side to do this. Use the following Guiding Questions to help your students with the purpose of comparing the two.
Students can use the pictures below for their presentations.
How are Father Hidalgo and MLK Jr similar in the movements they were leading?
How are the participants in the background of the images similar/different?
Explain how the two “fights” of each leader are different, and perhaps similar? (violent/non-violent)
Which of these sources were created with bias? What is the artist's point of view?
Complete the Cry of Dolores APPARTS activity by using a the ThingLink app. Have students take a picture of the reading selection for their background picture. Create 7 tags to represent each part of APPARTS. ***Kids can attach their ThingLink directly to Google Classroom from the ThingLink app.
